DRK Mantrailing: the German Red Cross's operational certification

Unlike the other certifications on this page, DRK (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz - the German Red Cross) certifies teams for real operational deployment in missing-person searches. It is not a stand-alone exam: it builds on the base rescue-dog certification (area/rubble search) and requires active membership in a DRK rescue-dog unit.

What DRK Mantrailing certification is

The regulations supplement the "Joint exam and examiner regulations for rescue-dog teams [area/rubble search]" (GemPPO-RH F/T) - Mantrailing is treated as an additional specialisation, not a stand-alone way into search-and-rescue.

Mantrailing teams can be used either as a supplement to area-search teams, or independently, in very busy areas or city centres. A Mantrailing team may only be deployed by a unit that is itself deployment-ready.

Who can enter

  • Active membership in a DRK rescue-dog unit - a mandatory requirement, checked at entry.
  • Minimum handler age: 18; minors under 18 may sit the exam, but cannot be deployed operationally until they reach that age.
  • Dog age: minimum 16 months at the first exam; the maximum age at first passing the base certification (GemPPO) is 7 years.
  • The dog must have previously passed an aptitude test (Eignungstest).
  • The handler must demonstrate training in first aid, cynology, orientation and map work, radio communication, Mantrailing-specific tactics (situation assessment), dog transport rules and accident prevention.

Exam structure: theory + practical trial

The exam has two mandatory parts, in this order: the theoretical knowledge test (Fachfragenprüfung) and the practical Mantrailing trial (Mantrailingprüfung).

Component Details
Theory test 25 questions from a question bank, answered within 20 minutes; passing requires at least 60% correct answers (BKZ 4 or better, on a BKZ 1-5 scale).
Practical trial A trail 12 to 30 hours old, about 1.5 km long, with at least 50% of it inside a built-up locality. Search start area: ~200 m², with at least 3 obvious departure directions, maximum 20 minutes to take up the trail. Total search time: maximum 1 hour (including breaks).

How it is scored

Each practical sub-task is scored on a BKZ grade from 1 (flawless) to 5 (fail, team not deployment-ready): gathering and assessing information from the exam team, situation assessment and handling the scent article, executing the search, indicating the found person, and reporting the find location plus the first-response actions taken.

The exam is only passed if every sub-task reaches at least BKZ 4 (the same rule as the theory test). A wrong or missing indication, aggression by the dog towards people or other dogs, or exceeding the search time limit, each automatically means failure.

Validity and retaking

  • On passing, the team receives the status "Geprüftes Rettungshundeteam - Mantrailing", valid for 24 months - it must be renewed by retesting to keep deployment readiness.
  • A failed exam immediately revokes the team's deployment readiness in the Mantrailing specialty.
  • A retake is possible at the earliest after 4 weeks.
  • If the same team (same dog + same handler) fails the exam 6 times in a row, it is no longer admitted to any further Mantrailing exam - the dog may still try with a different handler.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is DRK Mantrailing certification?

The German Red Cross's certification for rescue-dog teams specialising in Mantrailing - a supplement to the base area/rubble-search certification, not a stand-alone way in.

Does DRK certification grant the right to take part in real searches?

Yes - unlike the base levels of DVG or CCM, DRK Mantrailing is a fully operational certification, but conditional on active membership in a DRK unit.

How long is the certification valid for?

24 months, after which the team must retake the exam to keep its deployment readiness.

Can a team from outside Germany take part?

Not in practice - the regulations explicitly require active membership in a DRK (German Red Cross) rescue-dog unit, so access is limited to teams already integrated into that organisation.
