Mantrailing in Romania - Dog Sport & Search Training

Mantrailing Romania is a community-driven project dedicated to dog lovers and dog sports enthusiasts across Romania. Created out of passion, our mission is to promote mantrailing training as a rewarding activity that strengthens the bond between humans and dogs through teamwork, trust, and cooperation.

Mantrailing is a dog sport based on following a human scent trail. Dogs learn to track a specific person using positive reinforcement methods, making the training enjoyable, motivating, and highly effective. This form of search dog training stimulates both the mental and physical abilities of the dog and the handler.

One of the greatest advantages of mantrailing is accessibility. Any dog can participate, regardless of breed, age, or experience level. Whether you are looking for a fun outdoor activity, advanced dog training, or a new canine sport in Romania, mantrailing offers an exciting and fulfilling experience.

Through our mantrailing events, workshops, and training sessions, we aim to build an active community of handlers and dogs who share a passion for learning, movement, and collaboration. Mantrailing Romania is more than a sport - it is a lifestyle that encourages physical activity, mental stimulation, and a deep human-dog connection.

Join Mantrailing Romania and discover the power of teamwork, trust, and adventure with your dog.

About Mantrailing Romania

Who we are and what Mantrailing Romania stands for

The Drumeții Montane Association was born from the desire to do that SOMETHING we all talk about needing to be done, yet rarely take the next step toward. It was shaped along the ridges of the Parâng Mountains, in the forests of the Vâlcan Mountains, and on the banks of the waters in the Retezat area, with the hope that we would become the answer to the question: WHO?

We organize the largest environmental education project in Romania - Eco Junior - with over 700 partner educational institutions across Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

Starting in 2025, we also established a canine Search and Rescue division - Mantrailing - where we train dogs to locate missing persons using scent tracking.

We warmly invite everyone who wishes to join us on this journey to walk alongside us and take a step together toward a better world.

Our mission in canine training and obedience

Our mission is to promote mantrailing and canine training as activities accessible to all dog enthusiasts, whether they wish to practice this discipline as a hobby or at a professional level. We believe that the relationship between dog and handler is built on trust, consistency, and training, and that mantrailing is one of the most effective and natural ways to harness a dog’s abilities.

We place a strong emphasis on canine obedience, which we consider the foundation of any balanced and high-performing dog. We train consistently to develop control, focus, and cooperation, both in everyday life and in sporting contexts. Obedience is not merely a formal requirement, but an essential element for safety, performance, and progress.

An important objective of our activity is preparation for official exams and evaluations, which is why we follow structured training plans tailored to each dog-handler team. Our goal is to develop stable, motivated, and well-prepared teams, capable of participating in competitions, obedience exams, and specific mantrailing trials.

Through education, consistent training, and community, we aim to actively contribute to the development of mantrailing in Romania and to inspire as many people as possible to discover the extraordinary potential of their dogs.

Why mantrailing is more than just a canine sport

Mantrailing is not just a canine sport, but a complex training activity that harnesses a dog’s natural instincts and strengthens the relationship between dog and handler. By using scent, the dog is trained to follow a real trail in a controlled, safe manner, adapted to its level of training.

Unlike other disciplines, mantrailing simultaneously develops mental, physical, and emotional skills. The dog learns to work with focus in varied environments, to make independent decisions, and to respond correctly to basic commands, which makes canine obedience an essential element of training. Without a solid foundation in training and obedience, performance in mantrailing cannot be achieved.

Beyond its sporting component, mantrailing actively contributes to a dog’s education, energy management, and behavioral balance. It is an effective training method for dogs of any breed or age, adaptable both for companion dogs and for those preparing for competitive or operational levels.

Mantrailing is also a discipline that encourages consistent training, progress evaluation, and participation in exams. Dog-handler teams are formed gradually, with clear objectives, and the results are reflected not only in performance, but also in the dog’s everyday behavior.

Through mantrailing, canine training gains a real purpose, and obedience becomes an effective communication tool. That is why, for us, mantrailing is more than a sport: it is a way to build stable teams, balanced dogs, and committed people within a community dedicated to canine performance and education.

The experience of the Mantrailing Romania team

The experience of the Mantrailing Romania team is built on concrete results, consistent training, and dedication to high-performance canine training. Over time, we have demonstrated that mantrailing can be practiced successfully at the highest standards, including with breeds considered difficult or atypical for this type of activity.

We are proud to have the first Czechoslovakian Wolfdog in Romania to obtain an official certification in a working trial, a result that confirms both the breed’s potential and the quality of our training process. At the same time, our team includes the first Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs certified in mantrailing, a national premiere in this field.

Another important aspect of our experience is our ability to work with adult dogs that are already formed or accustomed to certain behavioral patterns, which we have successfully integrated and trained for search and rescue. Through structured training programs tailored to each dog, they have achieved mantrailing certifications, proving that performance does not depend on age, but on method, consistency, and the relationship between dog and handler.

All these results reflect our real-world experience in mantrailing, obedience, and applied canine training, as well as our commitment to developing dog-handler teams capable of participating in exams, evaluations, and advanced-level activities.

The connection between mantrailing, obedience, and search dogs

Mantrailing, obedience, and search dog work are deeply interconnected and mutually reinforcing within any high-performance canine training program. Mantrailing harnesses a dog's natural tracking instinct, but effective search work is only possible when there is a solid foundation of canine obedience.

A well-trained search dog must be able to work with focus in varied environments, ignore distractions, and respond correctly to both basic and advanced commands. Obedience provides the necessary control during searches, ensures team safety, and guarantees compliance with the specific rules of search and rescue activities.

Mantrailing directly contributes to the development of search dogs by enhancing their ability to discriminate human scent, build mental endurance, and make independent decisions. At the same time, obedience training strengthens communication between dog and handler, turning trail work into an efficient and controlled process.

In the preparation of search dogs, mantrailing is not an isolated activity, but an integral part of a comprehensive training program that includes obedience and continuous evaluation. Only by combining these elements can stable teams be formed, capable of participating in exams, certifications, and real-world missions.

This close connection between mantrailing, obedience, and search dogs is the foundation on which we build every training session, with the goal of developing balanced, confident, and effective dogs in any situation.
