The first step
Book a dog training assessment
Every dog is different, and an effective training programme has to take into account both its behaviour and needs and the relationship it has with the family.
How it works
A conversation about your dog, not a test
During the assessment session you will talk to one of our instructors about your dog, about the difficulties you are facing and about the goals you want to reach.
You will get answers to your questions, recommendations adapted to your situation and information about the steps that can follow.
The assessment is not an exam that the dog has to pass. Its purpose is to understand the current situation as well as possible and to identify the right training programme.
What the meeting covers
What we look at, and what you learn at the end
What do we look at during the assessment?
During the meeting we will look at:
- the relationship between the dog and the members of the family;
- how the dog responds to its owner's communication and instructions;
- the level of attention, motivation and cooperation;
- the dog's behaviour in a new environment;
- its reactions to people, dogs and various stimuli;
- any behaviour problems;
- previous training experience;
- the family's goals and expectations.
What will you learn after the assessment?
At the end of the meeting we will present our conclusions and explain:
- which aspects need improving;
- which exercises can be started at home;
- what kind of course or programme we recommend;
- how the training sessions will run;
- what the realistic goals for your dog are;
- how much involvement is needed from the family.
You will have the chance to ask questions and to meet the team of instructors you will be working with throughout the training programme.
Who it is for
Who is the assessment recommended for?
We invite you to book an assessment if:
- you are having difficulties in your relationship with your dog;
- your dog does not respond to the basic cues;
- it pulls on the leash, jumps up at people or cannot contain its excitement;
- it shows fear, reactivity, aggression or other problem behaviours;
- you want to start a behaviour correction programme;
- you want to sign up for one of the courses for which the initial assessment is mandatory;
- you do not know which training programme is right for the two of you.
If you already know what you want to work on, see the basic obedience course, Puppy Class, the behaviour correction programme or the mantrailing training sessions - the scent sport where the dog leads and you follow. Not sure it suits your dog? See why mantrailing.
Before the meeting
What do you need to bring?
For the assessment session, your dog should have:
- the collar or harness it normally wears;
- the leash you normally use;
- food rewards that it likes;
- its favourite toy, if that motivates it.
Please do not change your dog's equipment especially for the assessment. It is important that we see how the two of you work in your usual conditions.
