Vizsla in a pulling harness running ahead of a runner on a bungee line along a forest trail

Speed and running

Canicross

You run, the dog pulls, and between you is a bungee line clipped to a belt. The simplest way into the pulling sports - and the handiest, because all you need is a forest.

About the discipline

What canicross is

Canicross is cross-country running for two: the runner wears a special belt, the dog a pulling harness, and between them runs a bungee line with a shock absorber.

The dog runs in front and pulls, while the human follows and gives directional commands. This is not a walk with the lead in your hand - it is a race in which traction counts.

The season is cold: most competitions are held in autumn and winter, precisely because sustained effort in the heat is dangerous for the dog.

How it works in practice

What a canicross race looks like

  • distances from 2 to 10 kilometres, by category
  • individual or wave starts
  • cross-country routes: forest, field, hills
  • directional commands given by voice
  • a permanent connection between runner and dog
  • veterinary checks at serious competitions

Which dogs it suits

  • healthy dogs over 12 to 18 months, depending on size
  • breeds with good stamina
  • runners who already train consistently

Short-muzzled breeds are not suited to sustained effort. Neither are overweight dogs or those with joint problems.

What you need

  • a canicross belt with a low attachment point
  • a bungee line with shock absorber, 2 to 2.5 metres
  • a pulling harness fitted correctly to the dog
  • water and a collapsible bowl

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Canicross

From what age can the dog run?

You do not run sustained distances with a growing dog. Wait for the growth plates to close: 12 months in small breeds, up to 18 in large ones. Until then, only free play.

What temperature is safe?

The colder the better. Above 15 to 18 degrees the effort becomes risky and competitions are cancelled in high temperatures. A dog does not sweat as we do and overheats quickly.

Can I use an ordinary collar?

Absolutely not. Traction on the neck can injure the trachea. A pulling harness and bungee line distribute the force safely.

The rule figures on this page come from IFSS - International Federation of Sleddog Sports. Rules change and federations differ - always check the rulebook of the competition you are entering.
