Flashcards: the dog's muscles

27 cards, six per A4 sheet, to cut along the lines. Choose the set and, if you want an exercise, hide the name (the student writes it) or the text (the student writes the definition). No student names, no score.

Answer key

  1. Temporalis (musculus temporalis) — On the sides of the skull, in the temporal fossa, from above the eye to the nape.
  2. Masseter (musculus masseter) — On the cheek, between the zygomatic arch and the mandible.
  3. Brachiocephalicus (musculus brachiocephalicus) — The band on the front of the neck, from the head to the humerus.
  4. Sternocephalicus (musculus sternocephalicus) — On the underside of the neck, from the sternum to the head.
  5. Trapezius (musculus trapezius) — On the withers and the upper part of the thorax, above the shoulder blade.
  6. Latissimus dorsi (musculus latissimus dorsi) — On the sides of the thorax, behind the shoulder blade, from the loin to the upper arm.
  7. Deltoideus (musculus deltoideus) — Over the shoulder joint, from the shoulder blade to the humerus.
  8. Triceps brachii (musculus triceps brachii) — The back of the upper arm, from the shoulder blade and humerus to the point of the elbow.
  9. Biceps brachii (musculus biceps brachii) — The front of the upper arm, mostly on the medial face; from the side only its edge is visible.
  10. Pectorals (musculi pectorales) — On the chest, from the sternum to the humerus; from the side their edge shows below the thorax.
  11. Serratus ventralis (musculus serratus ventralis) — On the sides of the thorax, below the shoulder blade; it shows as a band with “teeth” on the ribs.
  12. External abdominal oblique (musculus obliquus externus abdominis) — The lateral wall of the abdomen, from the last ribs to the linea alba.
  13. Epaxial muscles (longissimus) (musculus longissimus) — Along the vertebral column, above it, from the pelvis to the head; in the drawing, the band below the trapezius and latissimus.
  14. Gluteus medius (musculus gluteus medius) — On the croup, above the hip, on the wing of the ilium.
  15. Gluteus superficialis (musculus gluteus superficialis) — On the croup, behind the gluteus medius, toward the tail.
  16. Biceps femoris (musculus biceps femoris) — The lateral and rear part of the thigh, from the ischium to the stifle and hock.
  17. Semitendinosus (musculus semitendinosus) — The rear edge of the thigh, from the ischium to the tibia and calcaneus.
  18. Quadriceps femoris (musculus quadriceps femoris) — The front of the thigh, from the pelvis and femur to the patella.
  19. Gastrocnemius (musculus gastrocnemius) — The back of the lower leg, from the femur to the point of the hock.
  20. Calcaneal tendon (Achilles) (tendo calcaneus communis) — Above the point of the hock, on the back of the lower leg.
  21. Diaphragm (diaphragma) — Inside the trunk, between the thorax and the abdomen; in the drawing, the dotted line bulging forward.
  22. Orbicularis oris (m. orbicularis oris) — In the thickness of the lips, around the opening of the mouth.
  23. Levator nasolabialis (m. levator nasolabialis) — From the forehead and the nasal bones, past the orbit, to the upper lip and the wing of the nostril.
  24. Buccinator (m. buccinator) — In the cheek, parallel to the axis of the mouth, between the masseter and the corner of the lips.
  25. Orbicularis oculi (m. orbicularis oculi) — In the eyelids, around the opening of the eye.
  26. Digastricus (m. digastricus) — From the base of the skull, behind the ear, to the lower edge of the mandible.
  27. Auricular muscles (mm. auriculares) — Around the base of the ear, with the scutiform cartilage in the front group.

The card texts are the ones from the atlas cards; the cards do not replace the atlas, they take it into the classroom. Educational material, not a diagnostic tool.
